Abidjan hosts international conference on sustainable mobility and climate
The second International Conference on Sustainable Mobility and Climate (CIMDC 2026) opened in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, bringing together over 1,500 participants including policymakers, experts, and researchers. Organized by the Urban Mobility Authority in Greater Abidjan (AMUGA) in collaboration with CODATU and Climate Chance, the event focuses on addressing urban transport challenges, pollution, and rapid demographic growth in African cities.
During the opening, Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé called for increased concessional financing and stronger public-private partnerships to develop accessible and environmentally friendly urban transport systems. He emphasized the need for climate financing with favorable interest rates and long repayment periods to protect public finances, noting that collective transport infrastructure often lacks high short-term financial profitability despite its social importance.
Transport Minister Amadou Koné stated that the government aims to create an integrated, multimodal transport network. This strategy seeks to move away from isolated transport modes toward a connected system that improves movement fluidity and service complementarity for the population.
