Regional developments across Africa in sports, policy, and culture

Various regional developments are occurring across Africa. In Côte d'Ivoire, Abidjan is set to host the African Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Championship from October 13 to 15, 2026, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville. The Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) recently met with the Minister of Sports to finalize the project.

In Mauritania, the Council of Ministers has adopted bills to ratify financing agreements with the International Development Association (IDA). These funds are designated for social resilience, productive social safety nets through the ‘Takaful’ program, and improving the quality and accessibility of education.

In Gabon, Vice-President Alexandre Barro Chambrier met with President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to discuss the concerns of the Association of Mayors of Gabon. Key issues include municipal financial autonomy, tax collection digitalization, and the need for decentralized administrative training.

Cultural initiatives are also expanding. Côte d'Ivoire launched the ‘Génération Patrimoine’ initiative to connect youth with national heritage through citizen consultations. Meanwhile, in Senegal, artist Bocar Niang is developing the ‘Musée griot. tes’ in Tambacounda to preserve oral history and the memory of griots through contemporary art.
