Abilio Brunini agrees to retraction to end STF insult case
Cuiabá Mayor Abilio Brunini has agreed to a public retraction to resolve an insult case currently before the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The legal action stems from an incident during a January 8th Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPMI) meeting on July 11, 2023.
During the session, Brunini was accused of making a transphobic remark directed at Federal Deputy Érika Hilton. While Brunini maintains that he did not utter the offensive phrase and claims the statement was incorrectly attributed to him by another lawmaker, he accepted a criminal transaction agreement proposed by the Prosecutor General's Office (PGR) to end the proceedings.
The case had previously been investigated by the Chamber of Deputies' Ethics Council, which archived the representation, but the PGR filed a complaint for the crime of insult in December 2024. The retraction serves as a legal mechanism to avoid further criminal prosecution.
