Žabljak celebrates Municipality Day and Montenegro's ecological anniversary

The municipality of Žabljak celebrated its Municipality Day on September 17, marking a period of significant local development and tourism growth. Local officials reported a record-breaking tourist season supported by infrastructure investments in transport, water supply, and waste management.

The celebrations coincide with the 35th anniversary of Montenegro’s declaration as an ecological state. While officials highlighted progress, such as Montenegro rising to 55th place on the Environmental Performance Index, Minister Damjan Ćulafić noted that the country still faces challenges, including the existence of 334 illegal landfills. Efforts are underway to implement the Natura 2000 network to protect biodiversity and support sustainable agriculture.

In response to the anniversary, the initiative ‘For the Zeta River, for a resilient city’ has called for a peaceful gathering in Žabljak on September 19. The group aims to raise awareness regarding environmental issues, including air pollution, river contamination, and the gap between formal ecological status and the daily reality of citizens.
