ABN Amro employees join mass protests against social security cuts

Thousands of demonstrators, including cleaners, teachers, and civil servants, gathered at the Koekamp in The Hague to protest government budget cuts to social security. The protest featured speeches from FNV chairman Hans Spekman, who characterized the use of social security premiums by the government as theft, and PRO leader Jesse Klaver, who pledged parliamentary support for union demands.

In a notable development, approximately 170 employees from ABN Amro joined the strike, marking the first such action by the bank's staff this century. While some bank employees cited solidarity with other sectors, others expressed concerns regarding internal dissatisfaction, including the loss of 5,000 jobs and a collective labor agreement (CAO) that only provides a 1.5 percent wage increase despite significant corporate profits. Some staff also expressed anxiety regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on job security.

Other sectors joined the movement, including healthcare workers at OLVG-West and public transport employees from Amsterdam's GVB, who scheduled strikes to oppose the austerity measures.
