Aboabo Market redevelopment will not result in trader evictions, says Minister Ayariga
Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has assured traders at the Aboabo Market in Tamale that no one will be evicted during the facility's upcoming redevelopment.
During a tour of the market on October 12, 2026, Ayariga was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Alhassan Suhuyini. The visit aimed to address widespread anxiety among traders who feared displacement due to rumors of impending demolitions. Ayariga stated that the government's objective is to improve existing infrastructure and expand capacity to accommodate more people, rather than displacing current operators.
The minister emphasized that completing existing structures is necessary to prevent the waste of previously invested resources. He also noted that the redevelopment project is part of a commitment made by President John Dramani Mahama during his election campaign.
