Aboso residents report rise in goat thefts using tramadol
Residents of Aboso in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality of Ghana’s Western Region are reporting a surge in goat thefts. Suspected thieves are allegedly using tramadol or sleeping tablets mixed with food or fish to incapacitate the animals, allowing them to be stolen under the cover of darkness without attracting attention.
Local goat farmer Kojo Bonsu reported losing nearly his entire herd of 70 goats, leaving him with only two animals. Other community members, including the Zonal Council Chairman, have also reportedly suffered significant livestock losses.
While some residents suspect the stolen animals may be sold to kebab vendors, no evidence has established a link to these businesses. The ongoing thefts have caused financial distress among livestock owners and raised concerns regarding community stability and potential unrest if the perpetrators are not apprehended.
