ABPF assumes operation of Maria Fumaça steam train in Brazil
The Maria Fumaça steam train, which operates between the historic Brazilian cities of São João del-Rei and Tiradentes, has transitioned to a new operator. After 30 years of management by the logistics company VLI, the Associação Brasileira de Preservação Ferroviária (ABPF) has officially assumed responsibility for the operation, ticket sales, and administration of the Railway Complex.
The transition includes a new pricing structure for the 12-kilometer journey. The 3rd class ticket has been reduced from R$ 86 to R$ 80, while new 1st and 2nd class options have been introduced at R$ 110 and R$ 90, respectively. Local residents of both cities are eligible for a special rate of R$ 40 for 3rd class tickets.
Inaugurated in 1881, the Maria Fumaça is one of the oldest operational steam trains in Brazil. The 40-minute trips run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, offering passengers views of the Rio das Mortes region and Serra de São José.
