Abrantes and Vitoria Roll Out Rapid‑Response Kits for Forest Fires

The municipality of Abrantes in Portugal has launched a Special Rural Fire Combat Device (DECIR) for 2026, deploying twelve rapid‑intervention kits financed with €180,000. Each kit includes a light vehicle equipped with a water tank, hoses and radio communications, positioned across the 714‑sq‑km area to reach ignitions quickly. The initiative brings together firefighters, civil‑protection units, the GNR, PSP, military emergency regiment, forest sappers, hunter associations, parish councils and agricultural groups, creating a network of 25–30 fast‑response vehicles. Additional measures include new forest‑surveillance cameras and protocols with hunter associations, as the town prepares for the high‑risk fire season amid concerns over lingering storm‑damage fuel loads.

In Vitoria, Spain, the city council has activated 27 volunteer farmers to support forest‑fire prevention during an extreme heat and drought spell. The plan combines technical risk analyses, improved forest‑road maintenance, firebreaks, vegetation clearing and updated water‑point maps. Volunteers receive specialized fire‑extinguishing training and will assist in rapid response across the municipality’s 63 neighbourhoods, working alongside the fire service, rural zone authorities and irrigation communities.

Both municipalities are enhancing early‑intervention capabilities and community involvement to curb the spread of forest fires as climate‑driven risks rise across the Iberian Peninsula.
