Abrantes Technological Free Zone to receive Pego electrical capacity

The Portuguese government has announced that a portion of the electrical capacity available at Pego will be allocated to the Abrantes Technological Free Zone (ZLT). Additionally, the operational management of the ZLT, which is currently legally assigned to the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG), will be delegated to Tagusvalley.

Minister of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho stated that a protocol will be established to transfer management to the local science and technology park. She highlighted that the Abrantes region possesses four globally scarce resources: access to the electrical grid, water, technical and engineering expertise, and industrial territory. This combination is intended to allow the municipality to selectively attract investments that generate wealth and employment.

The decision follows the 2021 closure of the Pego coal-fired power plant. The ZLT, which was delimited in 2025 and regulated in March 2026, covers areas related to Pego, Tagusvalley, and the Tramagal industrial zone.
