Abruzzo approves birth allowance to combat mountain depopulation

The Abruzzo regional government has approved a new public notice for a birth allowance aimed at combating depopulation in small mountain municipalities. This initiative is part of a strategic plan to address demographic decline and support internal and mountain areas.

Allocating over €2.2 million, the measure provides an annual economic contribution of up to €2,500 per child. The benefit is available from birth or upon adoption/foster care entry until the child reaches three years of age. The program covers children born, adopted, or placed in foster care during 2022, 2023, and 2024 who reside in designated mountain municipalities. Resources will be distributed based on a ranking system that includes social priority criteria, such as the presence of children with severe disabilities.
