Abruzzo electoral reform sparks opposition in Avezzano

Political tension is rising in the Abruzzo region regarding a proposed electoral reform by President Marco Marsilio. The reform introduces a single constituency system, which critics argue will marginalize internal and mountainous areas by reducing their proportional representation in the Regional Council.

In Avezzano, the municipal council has officially rejected the single constituency model. A document approved by the council, which received support from Lega and UDC members while Forza Italia representatives left the chamber, calls for an audience with regional leadership to protect the interests of internal territories.

Opposition groups, including Movimento 5 Stelle and Casa Riformista, have voiced strong concerns. M5S has filed hundreds of amendments to the reform, claiming it is designed to favor the current administration's political interests. Meanwhile, local political circles in the Marsica area are urging neighboring municipalities like Gioia dei Marsi and Pescina to engage in public debate on the matter to prevent the loss of institutional weight for their territories.
