Abruzzo implements measures to combat pine scale insect infestation
The Abruzzo region is intensifying efforts to combat the spread of the pine scale insect, Toumeyella parvicornis, which threatens the local pine tree population. In Giulianova, updated phytosanitary mapping has identified three infested zones, effectively covering the entire municipal territory. This expansion necessitates strict compliance with regional measures for all landowners, including private individuals, condominiums, and public entities.
To manage the infestation, authorities have outlined specific protocols. In urban areas, the only permitted treatment is endotherapy with abamectin, which must be performed by authorized personnel. Spraying or canopy irrigation is prohibited in urban settings. Pruning is restricted to the winter period, specifically between November 30 and April 1, to avoid moving live material during active infestation phases.
A legislative proposal has been submitted to the Regional Council to address the crisis, which includes a request for one million euros to fund a regional monitoring plan and eradication efforts. The parasite causes progressive plant decline, needle loss, and sooty mold, posing a significant threat to biodiversity, urban safety, and the characteristic coastal landscapes of Abruzzo.
