Abruzzo National Park reports successful recovery of orphaned bear Nina
Nina, a Marsican brown bear, is thriving in the wild following her release from human care. The Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park (PNALM) confirmed that the young bear has successfully navigated her first summer in high-altitude areas, learning to find food autonomously and maintaining distance from human presence.
Nina was originally rescued in May 2025 near Pizzone, Isernia, after being found alone at approximately four months old. Because no mother bear was located, she spent over six months under the care of park personnel in Pescasseroli before being released back into nature in December 2025.
Using a radio collar, the park's scientific service has monitored her movements, noting that she has since relocated to a different area of the park. As autumn progresses, Nina has been observed moving to higher elevations to accumulate fat reserves in preparation for hibernation.
