Abruzzo Region orders restoration of Foce del Saline Oasis

The V.I.A. Committee of the Abruzzo Region has ordered the Extraordinary Commissioner for Hydrogeological Risk to submit a recovery project for the Foce del Saline Oasis in Città Sant’Angelo within two months.

The order follows heavy construction work that resulted in the complete destruction of a significant reedbed habitat. This area was recognized as a vital natural site and a protected zone for fauna, serving as a crucial stopover and feeding site for numerous protected migratory bird species, including swallows.

The required project must aim to restore lost ecological functions by re-naturalizing and reconstituting the reedbed over an equivalent or larger surface area nearby. This process will involve transplanting or planting local common reed (Phragmites australis) and protecting the restored area from foot traffic, machinery, and other disturbances until ecological functions are fully recovered.
