Abruzzo unemployment drops to historic 4.4% in early 2026
The Abruzzo region reported an unemployment rate of 4.4% for the first quarter of 2026, a full point lower than the national Italian average of 5.4% and the lowest level recorded in decades. The region’s employment figure remained stable at about 512,000 workers, translating to an employment rate of over 62%. Compared with the first quarter of 2019, when unemployment stood at 10.1%, Abruzzo now has more than 20,000 additional people in work.
Regional officials attribute the improvement to targeted job-creation programmes, incentives for hiring young people and women, and workforce retraining schemes. They also highlighted the resilience of local firms in coping with high energy costs and geopolitical tensions, noting a rise in exports that placed Abruzzo second among Italian regions in total export value for the latest quarter.
