ABS and U.S. Department of Energy partner on maritime nuclear power

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to advance the use of commercial nuclear technology at sea. The partnership aims to explore the feasibility of nuclear-powered vessels, floating nuclear energy platforms, and the necessary port facilities and industrial infrastructure to support them.

The collaboration will address technical, regulatory, economic, and policy challenges that have historically limited the commercial adoption of maritime nuclear power. Key areas of focus include assessing nuclear transportation corridors and developing a U.S. shipbuilding sector capable of safely constructing and operating nuclear-powered assets.

Under the agreement, ABS will co-manage the Maritime Nuclear Applications Group (MNAG) and coordinate efforts through the U.S. Center for Maritime Innovation, where it serves as secretariat. This initiative follows recent federal efforts to promote small modular reactors (SMRs) within the commercial maritime sector.
