Abu Dhabi invests in hydrogen economy and utility infrastructure

Abu Dhabi is advancing its energy and infrastructure capabilities through significant investments in hydrogen production and utility networks. A report from the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry identifies the emirate as a strategically positioned leader in the emerging hydrogen economy. Leveraging abundant solar resources and advanced electricity infrastructure, Abu Dhabi aims to become one of the world’s lowest-cost producers of hydrogen and ammonia by 2030, targeting an annual production of 1.4 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.

In tandem with hydrogen ambitions, the Department of Energy, Abu Dhabi, has announced a Dh250 billion investment over the next decade to expand water and district cooling networks. This initiative is designed to support a doubling of the emirate’s power demand, catering to growing communities, hospitals, and schools. The energy strategy also emphasizes sustainability, noting that clean power now exceeds 5 per cent of the energy mix. Additionally, the emirate has reported a 20 per cent reduction in the carbon footprint of water production and a 50 per cent decrease in production costs over the last ten years.
