Sovereign wealth funds and institutions maintain Bitcoin ETF holdings

Major sovereign wealth funds and institutional investors are maintaining significant positions in Bitcoin through regulated products like BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), despite recent market volatility.

In Abu Dhabi, the Mubadala Investment Company and the Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC) held a combined 22.94 million IBIT shares worth approximately $763.7 million as of June 30. While the market value of these holdings decreased by roughly $118 million due to falling Bitcoin prices, both funds kept their net share counts unchanged from the previous quarter.

Other significant institutional movements include: • Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global increased its Bitcoin exposure by 21.2% in the first half of 2026, bringing its total holdings to 11,549 BTC. • Harvard University’s endowment stabilized its Bitcoin ETF position, holding 3,044,612 IBIT shares valued at $101.4 million, halting a trend of consecutive quarterly reductions. • The Texas Treasury Safekeeping Trust Company maintained its 197,844-share position in IBIT throughout the second quarter. • Edelman Financial Engines reported a $34 million position in spot Bitcoin ETFs.

These trends suggest a shift toward using ETFs to manage digital asset exposure, providing a regulated alternative to direct cryptocurrency custody.
