Abuja commuters demand increased security following rise in ‘one chance’ robberies

Victims of ‘one chance’ robberies in the Dei-Dei and Kubwa communities of Abuja are calling for enhanced security measures to combat a rising trend of commuter-targeted crimes. The ‘one chance’ phenomenon involves criminal gangs operating commercial vehicles to lure unsuspecting passengers into robberies, physical assaults, or kidnapping scams.

Victims reported various ordeals, including being forced to reveal ATM PINs, having bank accounts emptied, and losing valuables such as phones and laptops. The incidents have reportedly caused significant trauma and fear, leading many residents to avoid traveling by commercial vehicle, particularly at night.

Community members and victims have urged the government to increase security patrols, establish more checkpoints, and improve the monitoring of commercial vehicles. Local leaders have also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security agencies.
