Abuja flooding triggers demolition of structures on waterways

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered the immediate demolition of structures obstructing natural waterways and flood channels in Abuja. The directive follows heavy rainfall that caused significant flooding in districts such as Maitama and Wuse 2, submerging roads and vehicles.

Wike stated that the demolition would target all illegal structures built on designated water channels, regardless of the owners' social or political status, specifically mentioning that some properties belong to senators and other influential individuals. The enforcement is intended to restore the natural flow of stormwater as outlined in the Abuja Master Plan.

In addition to the demolitions, the FCT administration has banned the unauthorized use of green areas, parks, and gardens as car dealership lots. An investigation has been launched into civil servants accused of granting illegal approvals for these commercial uses. Senator Ireti Kingibe also noted that construction on floodplains and drainage corridors has increased the city's vulnerability to flooding.
