Abuja student swept away by floodwaters in Gwagwalada

A 13-year-old student, Alhassan Jamil, was swept away by floodwaters while traveling to school in the Gwagwalada Area Council of Abuja on Wednesday, September 9.

Jamil, a student at Ihyau El-Burhan Academy, was being transported by his father, Jamil Maikasuwa, on a motorcycle. While attempting to cross a double-cell culvert, the father encountered fast-moving floodwaters. Maikasuwa reported that his son jumped from the motorcycle out of fear, falling directly into the rushing water. Despite the father's attempt to grab the boy, the force of the flood swept him away.

As of Wednesday, search efforts involving local fishermen and divers were underway to recover the boy's remains. Some residents near the riverbank reported seeing a body floating downstream with a schoolbag still strapped to its back, though the corpse had not yet been officially recovered.
