Abujhmarh maternal healthcare improves with new care centres

The Abujhmarh region in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district is undergoing a healthcare transformation to combat high maternal and infant mortality rates. Historically, the area was largely inaccessible due to dense forests, difficult terrain, and Naxal resistance, which hindered the construction of roads and essential infrastructure.

To address these challenges, the administration has established eight ‘Maayka Kendras’ (Maternal Care Centres). These specialized units provide pregnant women with medical care, nutrition, and counseling before delivery. The initiative also includes the introduction of bike ambulances to navigate the remote landscape.

According to local officials, more than 280 pregnant women have registered at these centres, with over 80 safe deliveries conducted to date. This development marks a significant shift from previous years when families often had to carry pregnant women across mountains and rivers on makeshift slings to reach distant medical facilities.
