Abyei region tensions rise amid warnings of intercommunal violence

Civil society organizations and United Nations peacekeepers are warning of escalating tensions between the Ngok Dinka and Twic Dinka communities in the disputed Abyei region. The African Centre for Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding (ACCRPB) and the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) have called for urgent government intervention to prevent renewed violence.

Reports indicate a surge in inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech, and hostile propaganda from political elites. Specifically, ACCRPB highlighted an ultimatum demanding that Ngok inhabitants living south of the Kiir River vacate their area within seven days, a move that could trigger a humanitarian emergency.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) has expressed deep concern regarding the mobilization of armed youth in southern Abyei. While a peace conference in April 2025 provided temporary calm, UNISFA noted the situation remains fragile. The mission has increased patrols and engagement to protect civilians and has urged all parties to address grievances through established peace mechanisms rather than through misinformation or force.
