Lega Serie A President Simonelli addresses Mancini and Supercoppa
Ezio Maria Simonelli, President of Lega Serie A, has addressed several key issues facing Italian football. Regarding the Italian National Team, Simonelli noted that while Serie A clubs initially preferred Antonio Conte, the league now offers full support to Roberto Mancini following his appointment by FIGC President Giovanni Malagò. Simonelli emphasized Mancini’s pedigree and suggested the league should facilitate training stages for the national team despite tight schedules.
On the domestic front, Simonelli announced that the Supercoppa Italiana between Inter and Lazio is scheduled to take place before Christmas, with the specific venue to be determined at the next Lega Council meeting. He also highlighted the importance of stadium attendance to maintain the image of Italian football, noting that issues regarding Lazio’s fan engagement must be resolved between the club and its supporters.
Addressing recent refereeing controversies, Simonelli explained that officials Orsato and Messina are implementing a new evaluation method. This approach aims to prioritize the continuity of play by reducing the emphasis on minor fouls and penalty decisions, seeking greater homogeneity in officiating across the league.
