Academic conferences to address artificial intelligence ethics and impacts

Upcoming academic and organizational events in France will focus on the ethical, societal, and strategic implications of artificial intelligence.

Pugwash-France will hold its 2025 General Assembly in Paris on March 26. The event includes a conference by Professor Marie-des-Neiges Ruffo de Calabre titled ‘Deterrence and Artificial Intelligence.’ The discussion will examine the ethical challenges of using AI for military decision-making and deterrence strategies, drawing parallels to nuclear deterrence and the potential for an ‘AI vs. AI’ cold war.

In Montpellier, the Academy of Sciences and Letters will host a colloquium titled ‘Artificial Intelligences: Shadows and Lights’ on November 12 and 13, 2026. The multidisciplinary event will feature contributions from the LIRMM laboratory, covering topics such as the environmental impact of digital infrastructures, the societal challenges of intelligent robotics, and the regulation of autonomous AI agents.
