Academic institutions in Portugal begin 2026/2027 school year

Educational institutions in Portugal have commenced the 2026/2027 academic year with distinct focuses on community engagement and institutional values.

The Senior University of Vila Franca de Xira has enrolled 578 students for the new term. The program offers 72 disciplines across 80 classes, covering areas such as natural sciences, social sciences, arts, and physical well-being. Classes are held at the Palácio Municipal da Quinta da Piedade in Póvoa de Santa Iria, utilizing volunteer professors.

At the University of Coimbra, Rector Amílcar Falcão addressed students during the solemn opening ceremony. He emphasized the importance of defending freedom through proper conduct and called for the elimination of “deviant behaviors,” specifically citing racism, xenophobia, and antisemitism. Falcão noted that maintaining exemplary behavior is essential to preserving the university's academic traditions and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
