Academic institutions launch AI literacy and research initiatives

Academic institutions are implementing initiatives to improve AI literacy and integrate artificial intelligence tools into research and library services.

The University of Toronto Scarborough Campus is hosting a workshop series titled ‘Making Sense of AI in the Research Process’. This series focuses on how AI is being embedded into academic article databases, such as Web of Science. The program aims to teach students how to use these tools critically, covering technical concepts like retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and comparing database-embedded AI to general tools like ChatGPT to help develop ethical research frameworks.

Similarly, UC Berkeley has established the ‘UC Berkeley Library AI Principles and Priorities’ to empower its community with critical AI literacy. This initiative focuses on equipping staff and students with the skills to evaluate generative and agentic AI systems. The program addresses technical proficiency alongside ethical and social dimensions, including bias, copyright complexities, misinformation, and environmental impact. Recent efforts include staff exchange events and research into using AI to enhance accessibility for learners with diverse abilities.
