Academic leaders advocate for open science and honor physicist Luis de la Peña

During the VIII International Book Fair of University Students (FILUNI) organized by UNAM, Martha Patricia Zarza Delgado, rector of the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMéx), advocated for open science to be established as an institutional policy. She emphasized that scientific knowledge must be a public good that is accessible and useful to society, requiring structural changes in higher education institutions, technological infrastructure, and evaluation policies.

Zarza Delgado highlighted the importance of the Latin American ecosystem of open-access platforms, specifically noting Redalyc, a project originating from UAEMéx in 2003. She participated in a panel regarding the democratization of knowledge in Ibero-America alongside representatives from the Universidad Autónoma de Quintana Roo and CLACSO.

Separately, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) held a posthumous tribute to emeritus researcher Luis de la Peña Auerbach. UNAM rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas honored de la Peña Auerbach’s career in physics, noting his commitment to using science as a tool for social justice and his dedication to training new generations of scientists.
