Academic Ranking of World Universities 2026 highlights Stony Brook and Egyptian institutions

The 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, has released its latest results, highlighting significant movements for institutions in the United States and Egypt.

Stony Brook University has returned to the top 200 globally, ranking No. 188. This represents a 146-place increase from its 2025 position. Within the United States, the university rose to No. 59. The institution saw notable improvements in faculty awards, jumping to No. 38 worldwide for faculty receiving Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals, a boost aided by professor John Pardon’s recent Fields Medal achievement.

In Egypt, six universities placed within the top 1,000 globally. Cairo University remains the highest-ranked Egyptian institution, situated in the 401-500 range. Alexandria University and Mansoura University followed in the 601-700 range, while Ain Shams University, Al-Azhar University, and Zagazig University ranked in the 701-800 and 901-1000 brackets, respectively. Egyptian officials noted that these results reflect ongoing efforts to enhance the competitiveness of the nation's scientific research and higher education systems.
