Academic studies examine data mining applications and health risks in Peru and Ecuador

Recent academic research from South American institutions has highlighted diverse applications of data science and public health trends.

A study from the Universidad San Gregorio de Portoviejo in Ecuador explores the use of Python and the Scikit-Learn library for data mining. The research demonstrates how machine learning algorithms can analyze large datasets to identify patterns and trends, with practical applications in disease detection, customer behavior analysis, fraud identification, and student performance tracking.

In Peru, research from the Universidad Nacional Daniel Alcides Carrión investigated the relationship between residential altitude, central obesity, and hypertension risk among adults. Analyzing data representing approximately 27.7 million adults, the study found that hypertension prevalence was highest at low altitudes (14.0%) compared to medium (10.2%) and high altitudes (11.2%). Additionally, the study noted that abdominal obesity decreased as altitude increased, while maintaining an independent association with hypertension.
