Academic study examines rugby journalism in Spain

An academic study conducted by professors Pablo Sapag and Armando Recio from the Universidad Complutense explores the historical relationship between journalism and rugby in Spain. The research, titled ‘Periodismo y rugby en España: de la omisión científica a la autoafirmación digital y la feminización temática’, examines how the sport has been covered in both academic and popular media.

The study traces the evolution of rugby publications, noting a transition from scientific omission to digital self-affirmation and increased thematic focus on women's rugby. The researchers performed an archaeological review of media history, identifying five thematic rugby magazines that have existed in Spain over the last century.

This includes institutional publications under the Real Federación Española de Rugby, such as ‘Rugby’ (1970-2001) and ‘Revista de Rugby’ (1988-1993), as well as independent efforts like ‘RUGBY AMATEUR’, which launched in Madrid in 1982.
