Academy of Justice and Security conflict reaches Sejm and courts
The conflict surrounding the Academy of Justice and Security (AWS) has escalated into legal and parliamentary proceedings. The Polish Sejm's Parliamentary Ethics Committee is expected to consider disciplinary actions against Law and Justice (PiS) MPs Dariusz Matecki and Maria Kurowska. This follows incidents involving Matecki jumping a fence to enter the academy and Kurowska occupying a building on the premises.
Simultaneously, the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office is investigating whether the lawmakers violated Article 193 of the Penal Code regarding the disturbance of domestic peace. Official charges would require the Sejm to lift their parliamentary immunity.
In a related development, former AWS Rector-Commander Michał Sopiński has received the formal decision from the Minister of Justice dismissing him from his post. Sopiński has labeled the dismissal “unlawful,” citing violations of higher education laws and Constitutional Tribunal protections. He has announced plans to appeal the decision to the Voivodeship Administrative Court. The Ministry of Justice cited irregularities in doctoral degree granting and political activity as reasons for the removal.
