Academy of Natural Sciences to close Philadelphia museum

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University has announced the closure of its museum in Philadelphia after nearly 200 years of operation. The institution, which first opened to the public in 1828, is expected to remain open to visitors until late September.

Drexel University President Antonio Merlo and Academy chair Suzanne Biemiller stated that the decision was made to address financial challenges and protect the Academy’s scientific mission. Officials noted that visitation patterns changed significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic and that rising operating costs made continuing at the current Benjamin Franklin Parkway location unsustainable.

The closure aims to support the long-term stewardship of the Academy’s vast collections, which include approximately 19 million biological specimens, fossils, and scientific archives. While the museum is closing, officials emphasized a commitment to keeping these collections accessible for research and seeking new opportunities for public engagement. Additionally, Scott Cooper, president and CEO of the Academy of Natural Sciences, is resigning from his position.
