Acadia National Park removes Wabanaki interpretive markers
Interpretive signs at Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park have been removed, including a marker explaining the sacred significance of the mountain to the Wabanaki people. The removal of the sign, which identified the mountain as Wapuwoc, was part of a broader effort involving 30 markers across the park.
According to the National Parks Conservation Association, the removal was conducted under a Trump administration campaign to eliminate materials deemed disparaging to American history. The decision was made following orders from Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.
The Wabanaki Confederacy has inhabited the northern seaboard for over 10,000 years and served as the original stewards of the land. Maulian Bryant, executive director of the Wabanaki Alliance, stated that the removal of educational materials featuring Indigenous language and history has significant implications for the progress made in tribal-park partnerships.
