Acantilado del Asperillo in Huelva is Europe's highest dune cliff
The Playa de Castilla, located between Matalascañas and Mazagón in Huelva, Spain, is home to the Acantilado del Asperillo. This natural monument is recognized as the highest dune cliff in Europe, reaching heights of over 100 meters in certain areas.
Formed by fossil dunes created through the accumulation of eolian and alluvial sands, the cliffs contain materials estimated to be between 14,000 and 15,000 years old. The walls feature distinct color bands—including white, ochre, orange, and black—resulting from geological processes such as iron oxide presence.
As part of the Doñana protected area, which includes both the Doñana National Park and the Doñana Natural Park, the site is a significant ecological zone. The broader Doñana region, spanning the provinces of Huelva, Seville, and Cádiz, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994 and serves as a vital habitat for species such as the Iberian lynx and the imperial eagle.
