Acapulco authorities commemorate victims of Hurricane Otis
State and federal authorities held a solemn ceremony in Acapulco to mark the third anniversary of Hurricane Otis, which struck the Guerrero coast in October 2023. The event honored the 68 people confirmed dead and 32 individuals reported missing following the disaster.
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda, alongside Admiral Martín Enrique Barney Montalvo of the Eighth Naval Region and representatives from various government branches, led the commemorations. The ceremony included raising the national flag to half-mast at the Acapulco boardwalk and a moment of silence to honor those lost, particularly maritime workers who were in the bay during the impact.
Officials also traveled by boat to the El Morro area in Santa Lucía Bay to deposit a floral offering in the sea. In a parallel tribute, the Secretariat of the Navy recognized the humanitarian aid, medical assistance, and security efforts provided by naval personnel during the emergency response.
