Acapulco removes dangerous cathedral cross and ad tower after Hurricane Otis

Municipal civil protection in Acapulco cordoned off part of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Solitude after a risk assessment identified a cross on one of its towers that could fall and endanger pedestrians. The director of civil protection, Raúl Noyola Rocha, said the structure would be cut and removed once scaffolding and equipment are in place. The cathedral has been under rehabilitation since 2025 following damage from Hurricane Otis.

Firefighters also dismantled an eight‑metre‑high advertising tower on Niños Héroes Avenue after detecting severe metal damage caused by the same hurricane. The fire department director, Héctor Vinalay Jerónimo, explained the removal was part of preventive actions ordered by the municipal government during the rainy season, with further inspections planned for other vulnerable structures.
