Acara report projects Argentina's energy needs through 2031

The Argentine Automobile Dealers Association (Acara) and Siomaa have released a report projecting the energy consumption of the national automotive fleet through 2031. The report highlights a significant acceleration in electromobility, with plug-in vehicles expected to increase nearly 12-fold between late 2026 and 2031.

Despite the rise in electric vehicle sales, the total vehicle fleet will remain dominated by internal combustion engines, which are projected to account for 95.3% of the stock by 2031. The total fleet is expected to grow from 14.5 million units to 17.2 million units during this period. This shift will cause electricity consumption for mobility to rise from approximately 29 GWh to 322 GWh, while liquid fuel consumption is also expected to increase by 14.5% due to the growing total stock.

The report identifies a critical deficit in charging infrastructure. Argentina currently maintains a ratio of 61 plug-in vehicles per charging point, significantly higher than the global average of approximately 11:1. To meet projected needs by 2031, the country would require roughly 29,800 public charging points, a figure the current network only covers by 1%. Furthermore, electrification remains highly centralized, with the Buenos Aires metropolitan area and CABA accounting for approximately 70% of the nation's public infrastructure.
