Acas launches consultation on updated workplace disciplinary Code
Acas has opened a public consultation on a revised Code of Practice for disciplinary and grievance procedures, aiming to encourage early, informal resolution of workplace concerns. The agency's research estimates that formal disciplinary and grievance processes cost UK employers about £2.36 billion each year, while informal resolution costs roughly £250 million.
Baroness Maggie Jones, Chair of Acas, said that effective early intervention saves money, time and improves staff wellbeing. The updated Code, which last changed in 2009, will provide guidance for employers, workers and representatives and may affect tribunal awards, which can be adjusted by up to 25 % for non‑compliance. A YouGov poll of British businesses highlighted three key factors for informal conflict handling: a good working relationship, a shared willingness to find a solution, and a culture that supports open conversations. The consultation runs until 23 September 2026.
