Acatlán de Osorio succession sparks nepotism concerns
Local legislators are raising concerns regarding the potential succession of María Isabel Bárcenas as the municipal president of Acatlán de Osorio. Should the current mayor, Guadalupe Lucero Bárcenas, be removed from office via a revocation of mandate by the State Congress, her mother is registered as the substitute.
PAN deputy Marcos Castro argued that allowing the mayor’s mother to assume leadership would be a “grave error” given the current social and political climate. He suggested that installing a Municipal Council composed of independent, recognized citizens would be more appropriate to maintain public trust and avoid accusations of nepotism.
Similarly, Morena deputy Julio Miguel Huerta Gómez described the move as “politically incorrect.” While acknowledging that there may be no direct legal impediment, Huerta Gómez warned that the appointment of a direct relative could trigger significant social discontent and accusations of manipulating electoral outcomes. He emphasized that any transition of power must strictly adhere to constitutional frameworks and respect the original will of the voters.
