ACC Turnaround Plan improves rehabilitation outcomes in New Zealand

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) is seeing positive results from its Turnaround Plan, which focuses on improved rehabilitation to help injured New Zealanders return to work and independence more quickly. Minister for ACC Scott Simpson stated that individuals with less serious injuries, such as sprains, are recovering sooner, which reduces pressure on the scheme.

A key component of the plan is the reintroduction of a one-on-one case manager system for most weekly compensation clients, providing them with a single point of contact. Data shows that long-term claims, excluding sensitive claims, have decreased by four percent compared to July of the previous year.

In 2025, ACC allocated $4.4 billion toward treatment and rehabilitation and $3.1 billion for weekly compensation to over 160,000 people unable to work due to injury. These injuries accounted for more than 20.8 million lost working days and $8.7 billion in lost economic output. Minister Simpson emphasized that the plan does not reduce support for those with serious or persistent injuries.
