Accelerated Biological Aging Linked to Rising Early-Onset Cancer Risk

Large‑scale studies in the United Kingdom and the United States have found that younger birth cohorts are aging biologically faster than previous generations. Researchers measured biological age using blood‑based biomarkers (e.g., the PhenoAge algorithm) and observed that individuals born after 1965 show a significant gap between biological and chronological age. This accelerated aging is associated with an 8‑15 % higher risk of early‑onset solid tumours, especially lung, colorectal, gastrointestinal and uterine cancers. The risk rises further when specific organ systems age prematurely – immune‑system aging correlates with early‑onset lung cancer, while adipose‑tissue aging predicts early‑onset colorectal cancer. The findings have prompted calls to revise cancer‑screening guidelines to incorporate biological‑age metrics rather than relying solely on chronological age. Parallel registry analyses in Germany confirm a modest increase in colorectal cancer among adults aged 20‑39, underscoring the broader global trend of younger adults facing higher cancer incidence.
