Accelerated Biological Aging Linked to Rising Early-Onset Cancer Risk

New research shows that people born in later generations have larger biological age gaps—appearing older than their chronological age—than earlier cohorts. Analyses of 154,169 participants from the UK Biobank and 10,262 participants from the US All of Us study found a 23% higher standardized PhenoAge gap for those born 1965‑1974 versus 1950‑1954 in the UK, and a 92% higher gap for 1990‑1999 births versus 1965‑1969 in the US.

Each standard‑deviation increase in this age gap was associated with an 8% higher risk of early‑onset solid cancers (under age 55) in the UK cohort and a 22% increase in the US cohort, driven mainly by lung, colorectal and uterine cancers. Organ‑specific aging signatures linked immune‑tissue aging to lung cancer and adipose‑tissue aging to colorectal cancer.

Researchers suggest obesity, poor diet, sedentary lifestyles, stress and environmental exposures may accelerate biological aging, raising the possibility that early detection of accelerated aging could guide preventive interventions.
