Accessibility initiatives expand mountain tourism in Germany and Austria

Various regional tourism initiatives in Germany and Austria are enhancing accessibility for individuals with limited mobility, including wheelchair users, seniors, and families with strollers.

In Bergkamen, Germany, a shuttle service is being offered for the 'Großes Holz' slag heap on September 6, 2026. The service provides transport from the visitor parking area to the summit, known as 'Adener Höhe', using specially equipped vehicles for wheelchairs and walkers. The tour includes a guided tour at the summit.

In Carinthia, Austria, several mountain railways have received the ÖZIV quality seal for accessibility. Recognized facilities include the Gartnergokofelbahn, the Millennium-Express at Nassfeld, and the Biosphärenparkbahn Brunnach in Bad Kleinkirchheim. These certifications ensure comprehensive accessibility, including step-free access, designated parking, accessible restrooms, and trained staff. Other accessible options in the region include the Goldeckbahn, the Panoramabahn at Turracher Höhe, and the Schaerekbahn in Heiligenblut.
