Accessibility initiatives highlighted for Deaf communities

In observance of the International Week of Deaf People, organizations are highlighting initiatives to improve communication accessibility for the Deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind communities.

Avon and Somerset Police in the United Kingdom is promoting various contact methods for emergency and non-emergency services. These include the 999 BSL video relay service, the 999 BSL app, and Text Relay services. The force also utilizes the Convo service for BSL interpretation during 101 calls and employs Police Link Officers for Deaf (PLOD) who are trained in BSL and Deaf awareness.

Vodacom Group is expanding digital accessibility efforts across its African operations to remove barriers to essential financial and customer support services. The company is engaging with the African Union to advocate for stronger legislative policies that promote inclusive communication and the recognition of national sign languages to ensure digital transformation includes all citizens.
