Accident rates rise among seniors in Austria and Germany

Data from 2025 indicates a rising trend in accidents involving individuals over the age of 65 in Austria. According to the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KFV), approximately 266,100 seniors required hospital treatment following accidents, marking the highest value since records began. This represents a 23 percent increase compared to 2015. Additionally, 2,553 people in this age group died due to accidents. Most of these incidents occur within the home, with falls being the primary cause of injury.

In Germany, police statistics from the Neunkirchen district highlight the severity of accidents involving the elderly. In 2025, six fatal traffic accidents in the district involved older or very elderly individuals, a significant increase from two fatalities in the previous year. One notable incident involved a 92-year-old driver who struck an 85-year-old pedestrian, an event later ruled as negligent homicide by a court.
