Luis Antonio Espinosa Campos arrested for alleged embezzlement in Campeche

Luis Antonio Espinosa Campos, an accountant and legal representative for companies owned by Emigdio Gabriel Moreno Cárdenas, was arrested in Mexico City by the Secretaría de Seguridad y Protección Ciudadana (SSPC). Espinosa Campos is accused of embezzlement (peculado) related to the administration of Alejandro “Alito” Moreno Cárdenas during his tenure as governor of Campeche.

Investigations, supported by reports from Mexicanos Contra la Corrupción y la Impunidad (MCCI), indicate that during the 2015–2019 period, approximately 97 million pesos were paid to Mayavisión, a television company founded by Espinosa Campos. Authorities are investigating whether these services were simulated, as there is a lack of documentary evidence to support the payments. Specifically, Espinosa Campos is linked to the alleged diversion of at least 36 million pesos.

Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, the national leader of the PRI, has denounced the arrest as political persecution by the current government. He stated his intention to take the case to international organizations and invoke the Magnitsky Act to sanction those involved in what he describes as corruption and human rights violations.
