Accounting guide for calculating accounts payable
Calculating accounts payable (AP) requires precision to ensure accuracy in current liabilities, working capital, and operating cash flow. The standard roll-forward formula for determining the ending AP balance involves three primary inputs: beginning AP, credit purchases, and supplier payments.
To maintain defensible financial records for CFOs and auditors, controllers must ensure the ending balance ties to both the balance sheet and the cash flow statement. This process involves tracing the beginning AP to the prior period’s reconciled trial balance and using the AP subledger to provide vendor-level detail. Effective controls and reconciliation are necessary to prevent errors caused by ERP sync gaps or discrepancies between the balance sheet and aging reports.
