Accounting sector adapts to AI through new regulations and specialized training

The accounting and finance sectors are undergoing significant shifts due to the integration of artificial intelligence. In Singapore, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has issued new AI risk management guidelines for financial institutions. These regulations, set to take effect on 7 October 2027, require institutions to strengthen oversight, manage risks across the AI life cycle, and address third-party AI use. Compliance for board oversight and risk management systems is expected by 2027, with further requirements regarding data management and transparency due by 2028.

To meet these evolving demands, Singapore Management University’s School of Accountancy has launched an Applied Artificial Intelligence Track within its Master of Science in Accounting programme. The curriculum focuses on practical applications of Generative AI, large language models, and Agentic AI, emphasizing the ability to evaluate AI outputs and establish human oversight.

Meanwhile, a survey by Intuit QuickBooks highlights a generational divide in the profession. Approximately 90 per cent of early-career accountants believe they possess better AI fluency than their senior managers. However, industry experts note that while younger professionals are confident with technology, there is a growing concern regarding a deficit in essential soft skills, such as critical thinking and professional judgment, which remain necessary to supervise AI-generated conclusions.
